In addition to the usual chemical additives, waste water from purification processes usually contains all kinds of contaminants, mineral or organic oils and fats, solvents and pathogens.

Here, it is crucial not only to neutralise the effects of unused chemicals, but also to bind contaminants, detoxify them, and remove them from the water.

The difficulty in this is that different coagulating agents and flocculants are needed for the various purifiers and ingredients. For this reason, this task can only be partly standardised. Preliminary tests are absolutely essential in determining the chemicals to be used in treatments and their actual use.

In an ideal situation, the waste water could be used again after contaminants have been removed, because often the purification chemicals have not been completely used up. In this way, reductions can be made in purifying agents, fresh water, power and even waste water charges.
